Astronomy Talk with Dr Derek Bruce Fish – 11 March 2026
Few places offer a clearer view of the night sky than the mountains of the Central Drakensberg. Far from city lights, the stars feel closer, brighter, and endlessly fascinating.
On Wednesday, 11 March at 20:00, Champagne Castle Hotel will welcome Dr Derek Bruce Fish for a special evening exploring the wonders above us.
Dr Fish has spent more than three decades bringing science to life through his work as Director of the Unizulu Science Centre and through countless talks and science presentations across the world. Known for his engaging style, Derek combines scientific insight with storytelling to make the night sky accessible and fascinating for audiences of all ages.
Where and when it happens
Guests will gather outdoors on the veranda, where the clear Drakensberg skies provide the perfect natural observatory. Using lasers to trace the constellations and planets visible that evening, Derek will guide the audience through what can be seen above us, explaining the science behind it and weaving in stories, including elements of traditional Zulu folklore connected to the stars.
As with any mountain evening, the weather may have its own plans. If clouds move in, the experience simply shifts indoors, where Derek can recreate the night sky and continue the exploration using projected imagery.
This relaxed and engaging evening is designed to help guests look up with fresh curiosity and appreciation for the vast universe above the mountains.
